Chimuchembere Village, home to 2,386 people, is located in the Eastern Province of Zambia. The remote village is situated 149 kilometers from Chipata, the provincial capital city. During the rainy season, the community collects water from swamps. In the dry season, they dig in dry riverbeds for water. Women wake up at 4:00 in the morning, walk three kilometers to the water source, and wait up to six hours to collect water. Due to the limited amount of water, the members of Chimuchembere Village
...are forced to ration water. Consuming water from these sources are very dangerous as they are contaminated and shared with livestock. As a result, villagers, especially children, suffer from water-borne illnesses including diarrhea and typhoid. The situation is very severe and many children are malnourished. In October 2020, the lives of the 2,386 people from Chimuchembere Village changed forever when Innovation: Africa installed a solar-water pumping system, bringing clean water to the entire community. Innovation: Africa constructed a 9-meter water tower with a 10,000-liter water tank and 20 taps placed throughout the village. With access to clean water for drinking, cooking, and bathing the community member’s health and hygiene is tremendously improving.

Chisulo Village, home to 4,296 people, is located in the Eastern Province of Zambia, 135 kilometers from the capital city of Lusaka. The community members from Chisulo Village rely on the same open water source for their daily needs. The women of Chisulo Village wake up at 3:00 in the morning and walk over 8 kilometers to reach the water source. This water is severely contaminated and causes life-threatening water-borne diseases including typhoid and diarrhea. The situation significantly worsens
... during the dry season, as the available water source dries up and women must wait 10 hours at the water source for the water to replenish. In August 2020, Innovation: Africa, thanks to Bayport Financial’s generous support, brought a solar-water pumping system to Chisulo Village. This gift of water changed the lives of this community forever. A 9-meter was built that houses a 10,000-liter water tank and distributes the water to 16 taps throughout the village. Access to clean water has significantly improved the quality of life and health for Chisulo Village’s community.

Sinzala Village is located in the Southern Province of Zambia, 166 kilometers from Livingstone. It is home to 2,500 people and is surrounded by 7 sub-villages. The entire community of Sinzala Village rely on the same water source for drinking, eating, and bathing. To access this water, women and children walk nearly 5 kilometers multiple times a day and wait up to 4 hours to collect water. Unfortunately, the water is extremely contaminated and causes many water-borne illnesses, including diarrhe
...a, which is prevalent amongst children in the village. From August until November, as it is the dry season, the water completely dries up. With the threat of impending drought, the community has been experiencing hunger and economic hardships as they are unable to grow their primary crop, maize, without water. In May 2020, the lives of those from Sinzala Village were forever transformed when Innovation: Africa, with the generous support from the Mael Family, installed a solar-powered water pumping system. Building a nine-meter water tower, with a 10,000-liter water tank, and constructing 14 taps to distribute water throughout the village. Innovation: Africa ensured that the community has access to safe water for the rest of their lives. Having access to clean water has eliminated the risk of contracting various diseases and improving the community’s hygiene. Today, members of Sinzala Village are able to focus their time on income-generating activities that will improve their quality of life.

Mugaba Village is home to 6,776 people. It is located in the district of Katete, Eastern Province, Zambia. Mugaba Village is remotely situated, 32 kilometers from the nearest source of energy. The community relies on open, shallow wells for their water consumption. And, in the dry season, they are forced to dig deeper wells in search of water. Accessing these wells is very dangerous as there have been many instances of snake attacks. Additionally, the water is contaminated and causes water-borne
... illnesses, predominantly, diarrhea, dysentery, and malaria. In October 2020, Innovation: Africa installed a solar-water pumping system in Mugaba Village. A 9-meter water tower was built with a 10,000-liter water tank raised atop the tower, and 16 taps distributing water throughout the village. A tap was also built at the local health center to ensure access to safe water when treating patients. Today, living with water enables the community to make bricks so they can build stable homes no longer made of mud, grow gardens to ensure food security and economic prosperity, and ensure the health of the 6,776 people from Mugaba Village.

Siamafumba Health Center is located in the Southern Province of Zambia. It is extremely remote, over 100 kilometers away from the nearest source of energy. The health center provides medical care for 13,000 people coming from 42 villages. The medical staff treat an average of 30 patients both day and night. The clinic also provides medical care for pregnant women, delivering over 30 babies each month, nearly all taking place at night, in complete darkness. After sunset, the medical staff rely on
... the light of a single torch to treat patients. As a result of this dangerous situation, many complications have occurred during childbirth and the overall quality of medical services is tremendously impaired. In August 2020, Innovation: Africa installed a solar system at Siamafumba Health Center. The entire health center was powered, including all examination rooms and the home of the staff who live on-site to provide care on a 24/7 basis. The health center was lacking critical medical equipment and iA delivered new items including delivery beds and examination beds, a ventilation bag, a blood pressure machine, thermometers, a laptop, and more. Today, Siamafumba Health Center is finally able to provide life-saving healthcare to 13,000 people.
